Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is an Association of Catholics who, with the sanction
of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, have
formed themselves into a Legion for service in the Catholic Church.
The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness
of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation, under ecclesiastical
guidance, in Mary’s and the Church’s work of crushing the head of the serpent
and advancing the reign of Christ. The Legion of Mary is at the disposal
of the bishop and the parish priest for any and every form of social service
and Catholic action which these authorities may deem suitable to the legionaries
and useful for the welfare of the Church.
The Legion of Mary was founded by Frank Duff in Ireland. He formed
the first praesidium of the Legion of Mary on September 7, 1921.
St. Andrew’s Legion of Mary was formed on May 8, 2000. The name of the praesidium is Mary Immaculate Queen of Angels.
The Active members of the praesidium meet every Monday evening. The active work they undertake may include the following:
• Visitation calls to new parish members, parishioners in the hospital, parishioners in the nursing home.
• Delivering baptismal certificates.
• Consolation calls to families of the parish.
• Transport the statue of Our Lady of Fatima to homes of parishioners.
• Daily recitations of the Tessera and Rosary.
The Auxiliary members are not to attend the Legion meetings. These
members undertake the service of prayer for the Legion by the daily recitation
of the Rosary and Tessera. Both the active and auxiliary members of the
Legion of Mary are asked to make The St. Louis De Montford Consecration,
To Jesus through Mary. This prepares the members for the spiritual work
that they will undertake as members of the Legion. This consecration has
been an immeasurable spiritual help in the work of the Legion at St. Andrew’s.
Due to our success, the praesidiums within the Akron Curia have also chosen
to have their members consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary by the
St. Louis De Montford Consecration.
